My love for photography started early in life. It seems I always had my nose stuck in a book or magazine of some sort. My mom would often encourage me to read the books or at the least, some of the magazine articles. I found this didn't hold my interest, but I sure enjoyed looking at the pictures. The far away places, the unusual objects, the football players and really cool race cars, Oh Yeah, and all the pretty girls too.
On my tenth birthday my grandpa presented me with my first camera. A brand new Kodak instamatic with four rolls of 110 film. It took me less than one day to use all four rolls of film. Grandpa took me to the local drug store where we sent my pictures off for processing. A week later we returned to pick them up, I think I had two "keepers" out of the bunch.
I was designated to be the "family historian" taking pictures at all the backyard cook outs and other functions that families have.
My first 35mm SLR was a Bessler- Topcon I purchased at a base PX while serving in Viet-Nam. This is when I started to think seriously about my photography. Up to now , it was a release, a fun thing , a hobby. I thought I would document my time in Viet- Nam and perhaps sell this self made documentary to my local newspaper, or any publisher that might have interest. Upon returning home and reviewing all my photos taken there, I destroyed all the prints and the negatives as well. My reasoning, I didn't want anyone anywhere to view the horrors these pictures represented.
I started working on my "not typical " style shortly after that, Mom decided we needed family photos done, so off we went to the local mall to one of those big named photo studios. After that experience I knew there had to be a better way to do this.
After many years of trial, and error, shooting many rolls of useless film, forcing family, and friends to "sit" for me . I found a fun, relaxed way to conduct a photo session. Now with the digital age upon us , I no longer worry about those useless rolls of film.
To this day , my "not typical" style brings my customers back time and time again and hopefully you will too.
